Protector
The Protector is a melee unit from the Tribal faction. They are equipped with the Wood Shield. |
Characteristics
The Protector is a weak unit armed with a Wood Shield. They use it to bash and batter enemy units while shielding them from certain incoming projectiles. While they have low health and average speed, their shields let them endure more attacks by blocking projectiles and feeble melee attacks
In combat, The Protector's Wood Shield deals very low damage (25) but has a short cooldown period; they bash violently and are quite aggressive with the shield. However, the Protector is vulnerable from behind, and their shield has a round opening that exposes their face to incoming projectiles, (note that protectors can’t always block projectiles like spears, fire arrows, and ice arrows).
Appearance
The Protector is a Wobbler of average size holding a Wood Shield. They wear a skull as a helmet that covers the top half of their head, along with a brown garment held by a shoulder strap on one side. They also wear a necklace made out of three skulls from small critters with a strap tied through their orbits.

Usage
Army protection
It's better safe than sorry! The Protector should be used the way they were intended: to protect their comrades from incoming ranged attacks while advancing. One line of protectors in front is often enough, and it is better to spend the rest of the money on other units, as the Protector is of little use when they reach the melee.
A cheaper alternative to the Shield Bearer
Compared to the Shield Bearer, the Protector is 20 cheaper. Protectors are more aggressive than their Ancient (Faction) counterparts, but this is a double-edged shield, as it opens them to attacks.
The protector's shield is weaker. It has a round opening that allows projectiles to come in, if rarely. Its true weakness is lightness. Protector shields are wooden and suffer higher knockback, so they are more likely to get pushed away by stoner throws, or multiple arrows (3 or more), than shieldbearers.
Dealing with most ranged units
If you are facing only ranged units, having a mob of Protectors is a good strategy. Their Wood Shield blocks most projectiles, including all kinds of arrows, spears, magic, and even some bullets! Allowing them to easily close their distance and whack them with their shield.
Don't think they are invulnerable to ranged units however, a well-placed shot can hit their exposed leg or arm, or even a bullseye right through their face.
Counter
Melee units
Generally, using tree bark to beat some isn't lethal; it beats using bare hands but against better weapons like swords and polearms... the Protector's low health and harmless shield is no match against a unit that specializes in close-quarters combat, from the angry Farmer to the big great King. While their shield can kind of block some melee attacks, melee units tend to strike on their side or even from the top, negating their shield. Cavalry like Jouster can also be devastating to Protectors, as the mount can trample through the shields.
Distractions
A way to nullify the Protector's strengths is to have distractions. Having Bard or any other units will distract Protector and face their shield against them, leaving the back of their body exposed to incoming fire. Them chasing the distractions also buys more time for the ranged unit to reload. It is advised to have the distraction on the side of the firing squad, so when engaging at them, the Protector's side is always exposed.
Artillery and penetrative weapons
Most artillery can kill the average Wobbler if you have a shield or not, as their big projectiles are going to crush you one way or another. Ballistae and Cannons can destroy lines of Protectors, and Catapult and Stoner can launch big stones that wreck Protector mobs. Musketeer and Deadeye also have weapons that can penetrate their shields, rendering them completely useless for defense.
Crowd control
A shield can't protect against everything. Units like Bomb Thrower and Potionseller have area-of-effect attacks, so it won't matter if your shield can block mildly sharp sticks. The Dragon is also exceedingly good against the Protector with their flames, along with whoever was behind them.
Encounters
The Protector, being a shield unit, often appears as the frontlines of the army to protect their much vulnerable tribals from behind.

History
By definition, a "protector" is a person that protects someone; the strong protecting the weak means a better chance for the weak to grow and contribute; that's the benefit of being a eusocial species. People back in the stone age protected the weak too, from the newborn of the tribe to the very old man; everyone in the tribe will do their best to keep them alive. Many of our ancestors would exercise what is now known as compassion, and this managed to ensure their survival till this day, in the form of the modern-day homo sapiens.
But to protect means a good defense, though people mostly went with "the best defense is a good offense" in the Stone Age, as there isn't much documentation of shield usage in this very early era that predates warfare. Early shield users were hunters and herdsmen, who would rip off tree barks to use as shields; partly as concealment for stalking game, partly for not getting stabbed by a ramming deer. As tribes start to fight one another over living space and rations, the shield was officially invented. As a response to flying projectiles like arrows and rocks, warriors would carry a shield to protect themselves and their friends from these attacks. These shield-carrying Protectors would eventually evolve into the Shield Bearers as time progressed.
Trivia
- As with any other unit, the Protector can change its height, eyes, and weapon size variation depending on chance.
- Their shield appears to be bigger than the ones used by Shield Bearer.
- Sometimes, units will get stuck inside the round opening of the Protector's Wood Shield.
- Although inferior with the quality of the shield, the Protector can often win against Shield Bearer due to their aggressive side bash.
- The Protector is the cheapest unit with a shield in the game.
- Even though having a shield made out of old wood bark, modern ammunition cannot penetrate through it, nor does fire has any effect on it. (totally accurate, they say...)
- The Protector was first introduced in the Stone Age Trailer.
- In the trailer, the Protector had similar characteristics to the alpha Shield, which only charges straight toward the enemy and does not bash with their shield.
- Disabled people in the Stone Age were protected by their families and tribe, who would care for them instead of casting them away.
