Chu Ko Nu (Weapon)
The Chu Ko Nu is a Secret ranged weapon from the Dynasty faction. It is used by a unit with the same name, the Chu Ko Nu.
Characteristics
The Chu Ko Nu is a repeating crossbow that fires 5 bolts consecutively in one attack. Although a single bolt is less powerful than a normal arrow, it quickly adds up as more bolts repeatedly comes out and impale the target. This can be useful in taking out multiple weak units instead of overkilling one or deliver a load of damage to a single target. Like most ranged weapons, a headshot will double the damage done to the target.
The Chu Ko Nu's range is much shorter than bows and is easily outranged. However, it can attack quickly as it does not have to draw its string to fire. The bolts it fires flies at a medium pace and arcs noticeably.
After the bolt barrage, the Chu Ko Nu will be lowered for reloading. The weapon's reload time is very long, leaving it vulnerable for much of its usage.
Appearance
The Chu Ko Nu is a crossbow with a magazine on top, with a lever behind to allow a quick firing action.
History
The Chu-ko-nu (Chinese: 诸葛弩; Pinyin: Zhūgě nǔ) is the first repeating crossbow even invented. According to the Wu-Yue Chunqiu (history of the Wu-Yue War), the Chu Ko Nu was invented by a Mr. Qin from the State of Chu. Its comparatively short range limited its usage to primarily defensive positions, where its ability to rapidly discharge 7–10 bolts in 15–20 seconds was used to prevent assaults on gates and doorways.
Trivia
- Although it is a Dynasty weapon, the Chu Ko Nu is found in the map of Ancient Sandbox.
- The Chu Ko Nu used to have the same firing sound of the Musket when it was first introduced.
- Landfall once referred to the bolts as "Reapeating Crossbow Bolt".
- It has since been renamed to "Chu Ko Nu Bolt" after the Early Access 0.13.3 update before renamed back to "Reapeating Crossbow Bolt" after the Full Release 1.0.0 update.
- The typo has been fixed since the 1.0.3 update.
- The Chu-Ko-Nu's bolts were extremely light and did not have much power to penetrate nor incapacitate someone. As such, the bolts were typically tipped with poison to increase its lethality.
- When translated literally, "诸葛弩" means “Zhuge's Crossbow”.
- Despite his name being on the Chu-ko-nu, the strategist Zhuge Liang (Chinese: 诸葛亮; Pinyin: Zhūgě Liàng) actually had nothing to do whatsoever with its invention.
- The Chu-Ko-Nu was in use until firearms were introduced and became prominent.
