Catapult (Alpha)
- This article is about the Alpha version of Catapult (Alpha), and is very, very old. For the Release version of this unit, see Catapult.
Overview
The Catapult is a Crusaders siege unit. It attacks by hurling boulders at opponents. These cannot be blocked by Projectile Shields, and tend to crush lines of enemy units.
Appearance
The Catapult is quite large and has a Peasant operating it which must pull back the boulder before firing. The catapult can be found on multiple campaign levels in the Open/Closed Alpha. The rocks that the catapult fires have a spark effect when they hit anything.
Usage
Catapults are extremely useful against narrow and tightly packed formations and are best placed at a distance. They are also great for picking off remaining enemy units when all your melee units have died. Catapults fire in an arc, meaning you can safely place them directly behind a shorter ranged unit. Use this to your advantage
Against Catapults, use many weak units and spread them out to minimize casualties. Despite their strong linear AOE, they can only target a single unit at a time, meaning you can easily overwhelm one by attacking from multiple sides. There is a strategy/messing around where you place a line of Catapults against the listed and the battle could go on for a very long time. In the full release the catapult boulder will do AOE Damage when hitting the ground plus the usual linear AOE damage. There is a new dust animation and rocks hit eachother they will break into small rocks.
Trivia
- Torsion catapults did not see much use in the Middle Ages, as they were shortly replaced by the Trebuchet.
- Catapults in TABS are very accurate and will stalemate each other in a 1v1 by indefinitely intercepting each others projectiles. The result is a long lasting battle of two Catapults hurling rocks non-stop, with none of them actually hitting their intended target.
- There is a bug in which if multiple catapults collide, it will cause every unit on the field to disappear. They will continue to make noises, but that is it.
- There is another bug, in which one tile of catapult can spawn two. The two Catapults are merged with each other. They usually disappear shortly after being spawned.
