Footman Shield
The Footman Shield is a melee weapon from the Medieval faction. It is not used by any unit and is found only in the Unit Creator.
Characteristics
The Footman Shield is a large kite shield, useful for protecting the user from projectiles and certain melee attacks. When close, units using the shield will thrust it forwards and bash their enemies with it, inflicting rather low damage, with its cooldown typical of most melee weapons.
Appearance
The Footman Shield is a kite shield with two blue stripes on a red face with three horizontal white streaks across it. It has three prongs sticking out of the top.
History
Developed for mounted cavalry, the dimensions of the Kite Shield were to approximate between the horse's neck and the rider's thigh. These shields gained popularity amongst western Europe and even at times appearing in Cairo in the 11th century, and in the Bayeux tapestry, the soldiers are mostly depicted wielding the Kite Shields, outnumbering those with simple round shields. The exact origins of the Kite Shield are still something of speculation, and the common theory of the Vikings first wielding currently lacks any documentations of them using it, as theoretically it would have been unsuitable for the Viking's style of highly mobile light infantry. The Kite Shield was widely introduced to the Middle East during the 1st Crusade, when the Byzantines and Arabs observed the shields being carried by the Norman Crusaders, which left such a favorable impression on them that by the mid-12th century, Byzantium had superseded their previous round shields. Of course, these shields weren't going to be used forever, as by the mid to late 12th century, the Kite shield was faded out for the Heater Shield.
