Usage
The Cactus unit is a semi-cheap unit. Whenever a projectile or form of attack comes into contact with it, it "explodes" small thorns. The thorns deal considerable damage due to the numerous amounts of thorns that are dispensed each time it attacks or is hit. The thorns are an effective AoE attack, and a good way of dealing with enemy units. It also has a body that sticks to enemy units even after death that deals slow damage; its arms can also stick onto enemies and pull them towards the cactus to inflict constant damage.
It's worth noting that its cactus armor gives it a similar role to the Haybaler and Blunderbuss, which is to soak up ranged damage and act as a distraction to ranged units. Like the Haybaler and Blunderbuss, any exposed areas of its body will take damage.
Compared to the Haybaler or Blunderbuss, the Cactus is the most expensive of the three units. However, it has more abilities besides only having a good defense towards projectiles. These abilities make it a weak crowd control unit as well as a tank for ranged projectiles. This makes it preferable against hordes of weak units with ranged support. However, against strong melee units, the Blunderbuss will perform much better.
It has properties attributed to its cactus armor that it shares with its counterpart units, the Haybaler and Blunderbuss; the armor cannot be pierced by Ballista Bolts, arrows, and certain bullets. It cannot, however, block the damage of a catapult rock, a pumpkin, a bomb's explosion, a cannon's cannonball, or the Potionseller's confusion effect.
The Cactus' armor can be penetrated by arrows or bullets if the Cactus attacks with both hands. It will lunge forward but it will also show the body parts so the Archer or something like Spear Thrower can attack under its armor.
Trivia
- The Cactus had an old test combat move in the files back in 0.3.1.
- Despite this unit being presumed as a secret one because of how it seemed to fit into the Secret units' theme of silliness, it turned out to be a regular troop for the Wild West.
- Cacti can hang on to units even if they are dead, similar to the Halfling.
- The cactus' spike spray actually happens if it's "hit" with anything that at least would affect its hp in any way. For example, if a Healer heals the cactus, it will let out a burst of spikes as if it took damage.
