Jarl
The Jarl is the boss unit from the Viking faction. They are equipped with the Jarl Axe. |
Characteristics
The Jarl (Pronounced yarl) is the boss Unit of the Viking Faction. In the Open Alpha, they jumped at their enemies like Samurai Masters. In the Closed Alpha, they use their axes "properly" and no longer jump around. After being implemented into the new animation system, two versions of this unit were created, one which swings one axe (Axe) and one which spins two axes rapidly (Axe Master). Landfall put out a poll on Twitter asking which unit to keep. One axe won the vote; however, many people have replied saying they want both which sort of happened since the Chieftain does a similar thing. An article dealing with the other unit can be found here.
Appearance
The Jarl is a mighty Wobbler that frolics into battle with a bearded Battle Axe. The most notable piece of clothing on the Jarl is their bear pelt. The pelt itself has googly eyes, brown fur, teeth, and claws present. The Jarl dawns a stereotypical Viking beard. Despite being shirtless, it wears arm wraps with fur and has puffy pants with leather snow boots. The other prominent item is the leather belt that dawns the Landfall logo, a theme this game’s Vikings do. The head of the Battle Axe wielded by the Jarl presumably appears to resemble bronze, a brown colored metal.
In the Open and Closed Alphas, the Jarl (during which was simply called Axe) had their signature pelt, but had no clothes, let alone a beard. The pelt however had its eyes crossed.

Usage
Open Alpha - An Axe can easily kill a group of weak Units, like Peasants or Taekwondos. However, due to their jumping aspect, they were generally very clumsy and were easily overwhelmed. Note: In the Open Alpha, they only cost 200.
Closed Alpha - Axes are pretty powerful and can defeat any other non-super melee unit. Ranged weapons are their main weakness, such as a group of Archers, Spear Throwers, or a single machine unit will kill them easily, due to the Axe's low speed.
Due to the Axe's high health, especially after the Closed Alpha update, they can work fairly well distracting the enemy and killing some troops during that process. It is not recommended to use this troops to directly tank shots for the back lines, as its slender frame and high cost makes it a less viable option to shielding the back line, compared to cheaper Units like shields.
Early Access - Jarl has a higher cost of 1500 (Instead of 400) and swings it's axe sideways and not from the top, still dealing the same amount of damage. Because of this, the Jarl is now a very powerful units that can be the main force of an army. The Jarl’s Ice Arena can deal with small armies, and their Enrage can deal with single targets effectively.
Trivia
- In the Alphas, the hide on the Jarl had crossed out eyes, signifying that it was dead. In the Early Access and Full Version, the hide is "alive" and its eyes crosses out once the Unit itself dies.
- This is also implied by the thumbnail for the Viking Valor achievement.
- In the Open Alpha, the Axe is the second largest Wobbler, just behind the Chicken Man Man.
- The Jarldom is actually the second highest level of Viking Nobility, after the Konungr, which is Old Norse for King.
- Sometimes the Jarl uses the opposite edge of its axe.
- Just like the King and the Captain, its walking animation looks unique.
- The Jarl tends to be clumsy when trying to stand up, likely due to the awkward way they hold the axe when it falls behind their back.
- The Jarl could have possibly gotten two spinning axes, rather than just one swinging axe.
- Units that do continuous damage can cause enrage to activate multiple times.
- The Jarl can resist a lot of Hwacha Arrows because of its Enrage ability.
- Enemy units inside of the Ice Arena ability seem to take gradual damage, and it gives frostbite to low-health enemy Units inside of it, like Peasants, Clams or Jesters.
- Curiously, its Enrage ability rarely ever activates at the right time at all when fighting the King (it only activated when they needed it most on one time in a certain video)
- Some units/weapons (Ballooner, Flaming Sword and maybe others) will make the enrage activate over and over without any cooldown as long as they are hitting the Jarl, which makes a single one able to take down an infinite amount of these units pretty easily, so Jarls are extremely good while fighting groups of them.
- In an early version of TABS after the Alphas and before the Early Access the Jarl Duel wielded two Jarl Axes and they spun around vertically in its hands.
