Cannon Crew (Alpha)
The Cannon Crew is a unit in TABS from the Napoleon Faction. It is a highly effective ranged artillery unit capable of decimating hordes of enemies owing to its explosive shots and decent rate of fire. It also is the cheapest piece of artillery.
Overview
The unit appears to be an enormous black cannon on two wheels. A soldier in a Napoleonic-era cap, similar to the Musket's, holds tight to the end of the gun. The cannon fires large, round cannonballs, which explode into fragments (dealing AoE damage) when they hit a target or the ground. It is also the cheapest siege unit.
Usage
The Cannon Crew can decimate large groups of enemies, due to the shrapnel and explosive effect of the cannonballs. A direct hit is usually enough to kill most normal units. Due to its reasonably fast rate of fire, the Cannon Crew can keep a "super" unit at bay and eventually kill it.
However, the Cannon Crew, and other units in a similar design (Box Gun) have a tendency to glitch out when faced with terrain. The wheels in a Cannon Crew/Box Gun are generally unstable, and so the machine will usually flip over and self destruct.
When using this, try to keep them in a straight line. Having friendly units in front of it is a bad idea, as with most other ranged units. This unit is actually quite immune to musket balls (they fly right over it). Overall, this is a very good unit.
Trivia
- The cannon's explosive shots appear to be primitive shells; these did appear in reality, but were not used much, as round shots were more in favor.
- The Cannon Crew was one of the first units in the game, as it was available starting from the first Pre-Alpha.
- In the Pre-Alpha, the cannonballs didn't explode, they would hit their target, roll around and then stop. This is more in-line with how a Napoleonic cannon would operate, firing round shots that would slice through masses of soldiers.
- This behaviour also follows that of a catapult round in TABS
- In real life, cannonballs of this size would be ineffective.
- They are low enough to avoid a majority of musket balls.
- Cannoncrews do not have googly eyes.
