Ballista
The Ballista is an artillery unit from the Ancient faction. They are equipped with Ballista Bolts. |
Overview
The Ballista is an Ancient Faction (Formerly the Medieval Faction) artillery unit which has an extremely long range. The bolts released by this machine deals unbelievable amount of damage and can even send units flying, those who survive will get knocked back far. The force of the bolt is so great, units may collapse when the bolt shoots by them.
Appearance
The Ballista resembles a giant crossbow with a large bolt. It also has wheels which allow it to move. Its Operator appears to drag or hold on to the string which launches the bolt.

Usage
The Ballista is mainly used for one-shotting single units as well as a very long range, which most users take advantage of. Compared to the Catapult, which is great at blasting formations of weaker enemies, the Ballista has a very small AOE (Area Of Effect) but it does have the ability to shoot straight through multiple smaller enemies (except for Haybalers, Cactus and Blunderbuss), and it has better range. The Ballista works best for taking out super-units (e.g. the King, Jarl, Knight, or Mammoth) or enemy artillery units (i.e. Catapult, Hwacha, or Da Vinci Tank).
It is recommended to keep it in the flanks or the back of your army to take advantage of its long range. The placement is important since it can't take many hits from enemy units. They have the second longest range after the Tank.
It tends to be ineffective against the Cannon, as the Ballista tends to shoot its bolt over the cannon, missing it most of the time.
This unit may be the most affected by the Cheerleader, as they drastically reduce its long reload time and can make it fully-automatic.
Trivia
- The Ballistaw was used in history by the Romans, whomst used it as one of the many siege weapons.
- In the Open Alpha Update v0.3.6174.523, the Ballista was in the Crusaders Faction until the Closed Alpha Update (Neon Update) to where it was moved to Greece (Ancient Faction). It can be understood why since the original design of the Ballista called the Scorpiow in real life, originated in the mediterranean, and Greece was underpowered in the Open Alpha.
- Greece got a name change to the Ancient Faction to allow a whole new variety of units to be relevant and to be added to the faction. Also, the name change was necessary because the Scorpio was a Roman invention. The Ancient Faction is a combination of the Greeks and Romans as stated by Landfall Games. The Crusaders also got their name changed to the Medieval Faction, named after the Medieval Era.
- This unit used to fire a slow and limited range arrow that would explode. The range and speed are now buffed and the explosion removed.
- It was originally called a Scorpius.
- A Ballista bolt will stop in place if hit by a cannonball, the same way it does to any surface whilst the cannonball will keep moving to its trajectory.
- In the Pre-Alpha, the Ballista shot parabolically, in contrast to the flat angle precision shooting used by the current ballista.
- The Ballista actually has a small AOE area.
- The Ballista Bolt is the third single most powerful projectile in the game (after Dark Peasant Throw and Tank Round). The Hwacha is more powerful than the unit itself, but it fires many arrows as opposed to a single projectile, which are all significantly weaker than the ballista bolt.
- Before, when the Ballista is primed for firing and then dies, the bolt still shoots off, hitting enemies. Now when this happens, the bolt does not fire when it should’ve gotten ejected.
- If you make a replica of a Ballista in the Unit Creator, it will cost 950.
- The Ballista is sometimes referred to as "The God Killer" because of how formidable it is against powerful, healthy, single units.
