Jouster
The Jouster is a cavalry unit from the Renaissance faction. They are equipped with a steed as well as the Jouster Lance and the Jouster Shield. |
Characteristics
The Jouster is a dangerous cavalry unit of the Renaissance faction. The Jouster controls its horse's direction while mounted atop it, and can trample smaller units under hoof. When attacking, the lance rapidly does damage to enemies it's in contact with, being able to kill tanky units like Monks with one good thrust.
It also has a shield that can block projectiles/weapons and push enemies out of the way. The rider themself, though, is quite fragile. While it is able to walk and fight if the horse is killed, the steed dies if its rider dies atop it.
The Jouster Horse has the ability to create shockwaves wherever they canter. These shockwaves emanate from around their torso and damages enemy units who are within their 2 WM radius, effectively trampling those who came into their path. Naturally, they have to be speeding in order to inflict damage.
Appearance
The rider has Renaissance-style armor and is wielding a lance and shield. The lance has spirals of the lancer's team color and white. Both the rider and the horse have colored feathers depending on the team's color. The horse that it rides has a cloth wrapping around its body which the color corresponds with the team.

Usage
The Jouster is a cheaper variant of the Cavalry unit, lacking the Cavalry's ability to charge enemies, which in some instances is useful as it produces a more orderly result, meaning that Jousters are less likely to throw themselves off into the void while charging or to stumble next to an enemy while trying to turn sharply. It's worth noting, however, the dismounted Jouster is much more vulnerable than a dismounted Cavalry Knight. It is still a highly mobile unit that can kill most units in a single attack. Even Mammoths and all of the Giants are easily dispatched with cost-equivalent Jousters, and its weapon remains extremely dangerous when dismounted.
The Jouster can break formations and advance on ranged enemies, like the Wheelbarrow can, and is generally superior at this. However, heavy units in groups and hard-to-move objects can create "traffic jams" for Jousters, and when they can't move, the rider is easily reached and killed by other units. This makes the Longship effective against it in certain placements, given its deadly oar-wielding Vikings.
It is susceptible to getting killed by thick groups of high damage units like Hoplites, and Musketeers can pierce the neck of the horse and kill the rider instantly.
