The Sarissa is a melee unit from the Ancient faction. They are equipped with the similarly-named Sarrisa.

Characteristics

The Sarissa (Formerly known as the Spearman) is an effective melee unit of the Ancient faction. The Sarissa allows units to stab the enemy from a safer distance, and allows for dense formations and still be offensively efficient. They will also back up to maintain spearing distance. However, they are very lightly armored, and are vulnerable to any ranged attacks.

Appearance

The Sarissa is a Wobbler of either red or blue color that wears a Macedonian helmet while holding a long spear. It also has a cape and a big brown belt around its hips, holding what seems to be an Acinaces dagger.

Usage

Sarissae carry spears which allow them to get the first hit on other melee units. Sarissae will get the first hit on their opponent which usually kills them. But if the opponent has enough health to survive one strike, then it will be much harder to deal with since Sarissae can't take a lot of damage. This means that Sarissae are great when put behind Shields, in a phalanx formation (In this case, the Sarissae would attack while the Shields block the opponents). The first strike from the Sarissa is mostly a stabbing maneuver. After this they mostly swing from side-to-side.

Thanks to their long-range and cheap cost they can be effective at dealing with big/above average units, such as Knight or a King. Sarissae are also extremely effective like the Headbutter, especially in a Phalanx formation.

Sarissae are also a great if not a natural counter to the Jouster and Cavalry, as the sarissa itself is long enough to outmatch the latter two's lances and in groups, can even kill the rider instantly, if not the horse quickly.

Trivia

• A new patch made them swirl around when spawned.
• The Sarissa^W was a real, historical weapon that was used by Macedonians to form their phalanxes during the rule of Alexander the Great.
• In the Pre-Alpha, Spearmen would often drop their weapons due to a bug.
  • This has now been added as a feature of the Pike.
• They are one of the only units that walk backwards to maintain a distance, along with the Chu Ko Nu.
• Their helmets are similar to the Romanized infantry helmets of Alexander the Great.
• They are one of few units with much longer melee reach than your average unit, the others being the Harvester, the King, the Jarl, the Halberd, the Reaper, the Pike, the Blackbeard and the Giants.
• The Sarissa's and Fan Bearer's voices used to sound similar.
• In real life, the Sarissae were about 4 m (14 ft.) - 6 m (20 ft.) long.
